book of hours

book of hours
Design
The fabric hanging at either end suggests the front and back book covers. The individual larger photographs are the Chapter Headings marking time of day: Dawn; Day; Mid-Day; Afternoon; Evening.
The sequence begins with an epigram (James Baldwin quote) and a Table of Contents. The remaining smaller collaged photo-works represent the hour’s meditation.
Poets, artists, and others quoted in the collages: Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche; Adrienne Rich; Jennifer Hayashida; Lisel Mueller; (documentation from) the Vietnam Resource Center; Maria Lai; David Wojnarowicz; A Manual of Devotions, 1934; Ta-Nehisi Coates; Simone Weil; Old English Rhyme.
Chapters and hours meditations are mounted on ribbon bound fabric to evoke the beautifully designed and illustrated devotional books in use (by a few) in the Western World during the Middle Ages.
